Mock Ups...

Magazine Pitch Feedback...

I think i had a positive reaction to my feedback, i'm happy with the feedback i received and i didn't need to answer many questions  at the end, which to me means that i explained my magazine well in my pitch. The name for my magazine 'Compilation' was commented on which i'm really happy with, and i need to think about how to include elements of fashion into my magazine whilst mainly focusing on the music genre.

I'm happy with everything that was said, and took all comments on board, whether they were positive or negative, i also like how no one is doing anything the same as me, as i gives me all the freedom i want to be however creative or simplistic as i like!

Media Test Shots...

These are the images i took for my test shots, i used my friend Emma as my model. The genre of my magazine is indie/pop so i wanted her to look quite casual but smart at the same time, i wanted her to be comfortable with what she was wearing so we opted for a shirt/vest combo with leggings and vans. The images that i have chosen to put on here are the ones i liked the best out of the 40/50 we took, we will be taking some more test shots this week as i think we can improve on poses and technique etc. The shots i like most are mid-length/long shots, so we will be experimenting with them shots when we take our other pictures, i think i'll try out different styles and make-up next time as i want to go for a different look and see what style suits Emma and the artist she is representing.

Test shot's research/planning...

Tomorrow, i'm going round a friends to do some test shots for my magazine cover. At the minute i'm planning on what type of make-up/hair styles to use and what my model will be wearing, so i will be uploading pictures of the process. I'd mainly like my pictures to look either vintage or be in monochrome as i think it will give my magazine a bit of character, i've been researching different looks on lookbook.nu and have found some images where i love the poses, make-up, hair and what the models are wearing.

Magazine Inspiration...

After researching the style of magazine i would like to do, which is Indie/Pop based genre, i found some magazine covers and photo shoots on styles i would like to include in my magazine. On the magazine covers i've uploaded, most of them have a hand written element to them, which i think looks really good and makes it seem more personal, like it's been written for you. I also chose these images as the colour pallets catch my eye, and i like the way the models are standing/posing, the reason i chose some of the images which have models wearing geek glasses or dressed in 'geek chic' is because it is a look i am considering using on/in my magazine.

Magazine Name...

The two names i initially came up with for my magazine were 'Compilation' and 'Vinyl' but seeing another student from a previous year's magazine was called 'Vinyl', i've opted for calling mine 'Compliation'. When i came up with the idea i thought it was perfect, as it doesn't focus on one type of music genre and i can be more creative when it comes to featuring music acts etc. The types of music i am most into are Pop and Indie, i am also a huge fan of acoustic songs and covers of non-acoustic songs, i love Radio 1's Live Lounge as you get to hear how creative some people are when given a song to work on that is someone else's and how they interpret it. I want my magazine to focus on music but also have an element of fashion as i think music can follow a certain type of fashion and vise versa, for example- Indie. Most Indie followers and bands/solo artists usually follow a similar sort of fashion, which is smart yet edgy, whether it be from wearing geek glasses and boat shoes, to brogues and vintage one-off pieces. I'm still not sure whether my magazine is unisex or just for women, i think if it was purely just for women, i would be able to be more creative as i know more about the fashion and music types of women rather than men.

Looking at Fonts...

These are some styles of fonts i have researched using DaFonts, i chose the few that i liked the most and would consider using on/in my magazine. The style of music magazine i will be doing will be covering contemporary music, and i am thinking of the title of my magzine to be called 'Compliation' as i didn't want to do just one genre of music. The reason i chose the fonts that i did was because i thought they would suit the style and contents of my magazine, for the masthead i would consider using either a handwritten or block style font as i think it would look professional and presentable.

Looking at Double Page Spreads...

I like this double page spread as i like the colour scheme, the blue really stands out against the black and white and i like the way the title (The Teenagers) relates to the layout as it creates the impression this article is also for teenagers. The main image shows 3 lads, they all look between 17 and 20 and they are sitting/slumping on a bed surrounded by posters you would expect teenage boys to have in their rooms. The text is small but looks easy to read and works well with the layout, i like how one of the quotations is highlighted in blue as it catches my eye and looks good in contrast with the other elements in blue. I don't like how the NME logo is included in the spread as it offsets the scheme.

This double page spread is on the Indie band Mumford and Sons, it is a very basic spread and doesn't contain much information, the main focus is the main image and the title 'GENTLEMEN OF THE ROAD'. I like how basic it is and the basic colour scheme, there is more than likely a more detailed spread over the page.

I like the simple yet sophisticated layout of this spread, the image on the left, and the whole page of writing on the right looks good. The colour scheme  is white, grey, black and red, the red being the most obvious. The article starts with a typical drop down letter and is also set out like a traditional article. The colour scheme works well  as the red and black reflect off the white, the title is in red, just like Rihanna's hair which i think is a good contrast. The subheadings/questions used in the interview are also in red, which looks good against the background. The article is easy to read and is straight forward to look at which i think is always appealing to an audience.

Looking at Contents Pages...

The simplicity of this contents page i think looks good, as it is easy to follow and the contents are aligned to the left making the featured band/act the centre of attention. The contents has subheadings which make it easier for the reader to navigate, and it has sections which contain stories and information which are covered every month, and a review on an act/band/solo artist which i'm assuming they do every month also. The main colours used are black, white and red which i think stand out against the white background, the magazine's logo 'Q' is noticeable in two places which isn't overpowering. The headings are in black, some are in different sizes which i think make the page look neat and presentable, the page numbers are in red which i think adds sophistication and simplicity to the page without trying too hard.

love the idea of the iconic black and white photo against the black contents as it draws your attention to the text. The colour scheme (black, red and gold) work really well in contrast with the white background as it makes it stand out. The text is written out like a list and takes up the majority of the page which makes it easier to read and less cluttered, the page numbers are in red which breaks up the text and compliments it against the gold, and black. The photo is also a relevant feature which gains reader interest, i like the idea that the related text to the image is used within the picture and that it's in red, as it stands out from the rest of the text and is also a good contrast against the monochrome.

I like how the word Contents is broken up into 3 parts, it makes the page look less cluttered and look a little bit different to other contents pages, i also like how the image which takes up the majority of the page ties in with the colour scheme, the red heart which is clearly visible on the right side of this picture breaks up the colour scheme and gives the page a splash of colour. The contents and page numbers are both in black, but the page numbers are also listed in bold, the contents are neatly set out and are easy to understand and i'm sure are also easy to find.  The magazine's logo is also very noticeable and is blended in with the main image but is in the background which i think looks good and doesn't look over powering.
